"F*** all these gun toting hip gangster wannabes" is my single favorite lyric of all time and has been for over two decades. The cadence, the flow, everything. This album is such a beautiful blend of rage and elegance.
Their best album no question!
I agree. It’s rage and elegance that is a work of art.
Such a great line
That and when he said “f*** l Ron Hubert and f all his clones” and when he “baa’d” at them at a show😂
Too true
The artwork on Ænima is actually by the artist Cam de Leon. Lateralus would be the first album to feature Alex Grey’s artwork.
Yea hollywood messed it up once again.
Trash Talkers , It’s not a mess up. Being a highly visual artist themselves, Tool has always (and still do) utilize various artists to help in their visual aspirations.
Trash Talkers they actually were involved in a lawsuit with the artist of this album, total shitshow, big part of why it took so long to drop their latest one ✌️👊
@@cyberdemon1702 I hope he gets corona. Fuck all these scumbags and their lawsuits.
Hmmm good to know and now I can go find more art to buy
Lol... an “mom” isn’t particularly referring to his mom giving him an enema... it’s a reference to Mother Earth... and Mother Earth doing something about the human infestation on her surface
But yes that's the double entendre
Just as your mother would give you an enema. Mother Earth is going to give us an enema
Your mother gave you an enema?....... Yikes!
@@smokeyrameriz478 Mothers give suppositories but I've never heard of a mother giving a child an enema.
@@smokeyrameriz478 Haha. Nah, Maynard is coming from the point of view of a child's sense of security knowing that "Mom's gonna fix it all soon!" The enema reference is separate. Paternal Mother and Mother Earth are the "double entendre" so to speak.
What do we want?
- Parabol/a
When do we want it?
- Next tuesday, if convenient. If not, it's cool, dudes. We're understanding like that, here.
Lol, my thoughts exactly.
yes x 1MM
We're Tool fans. Waiting is in our DNA.
ok you need to look up Bill Hicks he is a comic that Maynard was friends with in the 90s (sadly passed away in early 90s) he has a monologue called "arizona bay." Hicks was from Houston and moved to LA to pursue his comedian career he hated it. He was often banned in the USA from Tv/Radio. He was wildly popular over seas. He was known as the "dark poet." you dive into that rabbit hole and then this song makes more sense. Basically Hicks would rant and rave that California should fall into the ocean "killing it " and every one in it and you would have a very nice Arizona Bay cuz Arizona would be on the ocean front.
Hicks is also the subject of "Eulogy."
@@beelzebob23 they were friends with Bill.
it's not about one particular person. it's about a certain kind of person.
mr zzrf first verse about Bill, second verse about Kurt Cobain, then from point of view of his fans, looking for their saviour ie Stans
yep...go further down the rabbit hole...Hicks was best friends with Kevin Booth who produced some of his specials...he did several documentaries, perhaps the most important was called American Drug War: The Last White Hope.....watch it....in that film there is a man named Michael Ruppert…..look into his work and you will see just how far the rabbit hole goes.
Didn’t they put some of Bill Hicks stand up comedy in the background of the hidden tracks on this album?
One of Tools most beloved songs. MJK is telling it like it is. Hollywood nonsense, BS, worrying over things that don't merit being worried over. It's a fave and hearing it live is one of the highlights of any Tool show. You guys are awesome. Tool Tuesdays are the shit!!
Thanks bro...were so glad to have u aboard. Stay tuned for more
@@Hollywood6IX boys please listen to the Patient. Sure to please... especially now.
Yeah, the Patient is great. They’re too many great Tool songs to chose from.
Love watching you two discover the greatness of Tool. It is adorable, but damned if it does not also make me feel old being part of the Tool army for almost 30 years.
93 Lolapolooza with Tool. Rage Against The Machine. Alice In Chains. And Primus as a headliner
Like “Aw-nima” or “ah-nima”... it’s a combination of the words “enema” and “anima”... anima is a Jungian archetype which is basically the feminine side of the male where “animus” is the opposite.... the masculine side of the female... so the combination could be seeen as basically like a purge (enema) of the anima... which is why if you’ll notice, the ALBUM is spelled “Ænima” with an i... and t SONG is spelled “Ænema” with an e.... a “purge” of LA.
@@ethanpayne7957 which is total tool tongue in cheek fashion
@@NooDLES411911 this is the essence of the occult. Multiple themes that compliment each other.
Eric Stodolnik you sure it's a good idea to turn these lads onto Carl Gustav 😇
Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
Really? This seems to be a variation on the standard UK way to spell enema. Like they write aeroplane and aenesthesiology rather than airplane and anesthesiology.
Mother earth flushing California, and people drown in Arizona Bay. Learn to swim, Learn to swim, Learn to swim.
Read through the lyrics they are awesome. Parabol/Parabola
Its a 2 part. Must be heard in one sitting
Listen to that song you won't be disappointed 💯🔥
Mmhm. Arizona Bay is a Bill Hicks reference about flushing California
It's about L.A., not California
Trash Talkers this is a once in a life time band.
Ahhh yeah Tool Tuesday, my favourite. Can you believe this song is 24 years old? When he says Mom, I think he means mother nature must bring the apocalypse. But yeah the rest of the lyrics are pretty much literal. Danny is one of the most powerful and creative drummers of our time. Big ups dudes, can't wait for next Tool Tuesday!
Still going to recommend
Jambi
Disposition and Reflection
When "The Big One" hits and California slides into the sea; "Learn to swim", "See you down in Arizona Bay"(because Cali is under water)
Dude. You guys HAVE TO REACT TO Tool "Prison Sex," "Eulogy," and "H." Nobody has reacted to those tracks for whatever reason (and I watch ALOT of reaction channels), and those are like some of their best tracks. HANDS DOWN. Trust me bro. K. Love you guys. Keep on rockin in the free world! 😆🤘
Thank you homie. They'll be coming soon!
One of the cooler, more interactive songs of their’s when you see them live. The entire crowd chanting “Learn to Swim” is an amazing thing to experience.
Is it weird I always close my eyes when they perform this live and just sing along and groove
when Hollywood says “thank you” i’m just sitting here nodding my head. we’re truly blessed to live in the time when Tool is creating incomparable art.
Paul d'amour wrote the bass chords in this song before he was replaced by justin. Just a side note
The lyrics"learn to swim" and "see you down in Arizona Bay" are a reference to a routine of the late comedian Bill Hicks, who talked about what the landscape of the Western US would be like once California broke off from the San Andreas Fault. The band was a big fan of Hicks, and this album could seen as an unofficial "in memoriam" to him. "Eulogy" (from this same album) is about his life, "Third Eye" (the LAST song on this album, I think uncredited) is a sound collage of the band and a series of Hicks's routines; plus the inner-sleeve artwork has Hicks portrayed as a doctor.
Aenima dropped my junior year of high school. I grew up with Rage and Tool and the Grunge music and the Best Hop Hop ever made. I feel blessed for being around then. When I was kid. You kids are catching up to me bro. Lol
I tend to tear up when I listen to Tool, their music evokes so many emotions...after watching you two listen to this song, I definitely cried.
He’s actually say “I hate it, I hate It, haaaate it” during that breakdown...Maynards off the chain!!
"Fault lines that cannot stand still" refers to the San Andres fault. The song is about mother nature bringing the final earthquake that flushes California's into the ocean; thereby creating "Arizona Bay". This is also why he says "I have a suggestion to keep you all occupied. Learn to swim". Great reaction videos guys! Try Schism next. You should watch the video as well. Thanks!!
JAMBI might be the next !!!! one the best tool's song ever, is from 10000 days.
"Mom's comin' 'round to put it back the way it ought to be" is mother nature 🤯
He's talking about LA and how fake everyone in LA is and how it needs to be flushed away and start all over. He references LA in the song and to flush it all away and see you down in Arizona bay. You should listen to Hooker with a Penis. It's on this same album It's hysterical and one of the best dis songs of all time. It's also relatively short so it doesn't take much time to listen too. This whole album is phenomenal(like all their others).
Im just curious, how do you guys know this is the exact meaning of this song. I have seen so mamy people say the samething. Im just wondering if Tool said it themselves or is it a common belief. So interested in this band
@@Hollywood6IX I suggest you look up the lyrics online and you'll see why. Most of their lyrics on other songs are very complex and left up to self-interpretation. A lot of the time I have no idea what they mean. These lyrics are simple, for them, and the literal meaning is easy to understand.
@@meb882 ok cool, i guess smokey was right when he said this was probably one of there more literal songs
@@Hollywood6IX BTW....my response may have come across as condescending. That was not intentional. Also, do Hooker with a Penis. I love reactions to that song. That's one that you can have the lyrics up at the same time. They're really funny.
@@meb882 no offense taken my friend and thanks for the suggestion
I saw this live and they ended the concert with this song... The crowd was buzzing on the way out. Tool is the bestest
The song is specifically about loathing California. it has reference to Bill Hicks' rant on flushing it, it breaking away leaving only Arizona bay. he mentions the fault lines, the earth quakes, the actors, the culture. The album is actually dedicated to Bill Hicks (revered comedian)
"Soylent green" is a phenomenal reference. Skates past a lot of folks - even some hardcore Tool-heads. Very dystopian.
You absolutely need to always have lyrics by your side!!
Man I love watching you guys react to Tool. I get goosebumps like I'm listening to it for the first time. Damn!!
Hell yea bro, its an experience for sure.
Jewel has always given me goosebumps. I recently just now ran into a new group that gives me goosebumps for the first time since Aenema. Jinjer.
Tool. Stupid voice text
Yeah, this has sort of been said in the comments already but the "Arizona bay" line is a reference to one of Bill Hicks' albums titled "Arizona Bay". Basically talking about California collapsing and being swallowed up by an earthquake, giving Arizona an ocean front view, or bay.
Your open mindedness is awesome. Tool is a great band. Keep doing what your doing!
This Album and some of the Songs on the album where inspired by Bill Hicks. Bill Hicks died in 1994, the same year this album was released, they dedicated it in his memory. If you listen to Third Eye, the person speaking in the beginning of the song is Bill Hicks. One of Bills albums is called "Arizona Bay" He talks about California falling into the pacific and sitting in sunny ARIZONA BAY. He has a rather interesting take on the LA Riots. He litterally got on a plane and went to England the DAY the riots started. He got off the plane and was asked what he thinks about whats happening in LA, he had no ideal. Bill Hicks was a great comedian and a REAL person.
This was the first Tool song i ever heard. 20 years later and it still gives me shivers. There is no other band. Tool reign supreme.
It was not Alex Grey who did Ænema’s cover artwork. He started working w/ Tool on the next album ‘Lateralus’.
Welcome to the depth of Tool.... Deep isn't a strong enough word to describe this song, or band... Glad your checking more of them out... Keep em coming...
Tool is how I found reactions and many of my new favorite bands. Back in the early 90s when we heard this it was already timeless. Music is the love language of Earth.
THIS, in my humble opinion, is the greatest metal song in existence.
Smoke dog, this is the one where you fall in love. You guys rock, watched a year ago, just revisiting the journeys. Seeing the moment is beautiful. RUclips captures it and we can revisit it any time we want! Spiral out everyone 🌀
Agreed, and to the OP...
You've brought up a "thing" I haven't considered, the concept of sharing a memory repeatedly, even if you weren't "there"...
Thx, man.
Alice in Chains - Nutshell
Mad Season - Artificial Red, Wake up
Finally someone with some sense! Thank u!!
I'm happy that you guys started talking and then said Hey, we gotta rewind it a bit so we can make sure we hear all of the lyrics
If you guys really want to be blown away by this band, you have to listen to Disposition/Reflection/Triad from the Lateralus album. Absolute next-level, elite musicianship on a whole different level than anything else you have heard before. These guys are just "different" than anyone else out there. Take it from me, listen to these three songs in order (they are meant to be one piece of music but were forced by the label to break it up into three distinct parts), and you will really "get" why Tool are considered to be the "musician's musician."
Yooo. One of my favorite things to watch is people getting their minds blown by TOOL. Eventually they just become a part of you...pun intended. You MUST DO PARABOL/PARABOLA, LATERALUS, THIRD EYE, WINGS FOR MARIE/10,000 DAYS (with lyrics) and LOST KEYS/ROSETTA STONED. The / are double tracks that have to be played together. Keep up the good work, we welcome you to the toolarmy. Everyone is a tool fan, some people just don't know it yet.
He says “learn to swim” because in the apocalypse fantasy being described, L.A. is the first to be hit, and “tidal waves” are a part of the destruction. If you look at the inside of the CD case from the Aenima album, there’s a holographic map of the US, and if you tilt it, half of California (including L.A.) disappears under water. Hence, “learn to swim”.
Seriously, this is the most awake I've ever seen Smoky. This song perked him right up!
Funny what you said about Maynard being prophetic: In February 2020 when they played Auckland, New Zealand just as Covid-19 was really starting to hit, before they played aenema, MJK said "Just want to say with the new virus causing havoc all round the world - CALLED IT".
This comment is unrelated to this Tool video but is a comment on your Jinjer Pisces video of yesterday.
Your Pisces reaction was a very entertaining reaction,- appreciate your immediate openess to all this new stuff that´s being presented to you.
Tati is a beast and Jinjer is an awesome band,- we all know that by now.
What really makes the difference for me is something most people seem to overlook.
Jinjer, - being from the easternmost part of Europe bordering on Russia and what is the beginning of the Middle East,- their traditional music is based around folk tunes and folk dances rooted in a wide variety of off meters.
Allmost none of their song have any kind of straight backbeat to them or in them.
Tons of 3/4, 5/4, 7/4, 12/8, 9/8, 6/4, 6/8, 15/8 etc,- but almost no 4/4 or 2/4 anywhere.
If you sit down and start tapping your foot to any of their songs and then start counting meters and bars you´ll quickly find that they don´t adher to standard forms of doing rock, pop and metal songs,- yet everything they do is done so smoothly and with such fluency that nobody seems to notice.
I have by now watched quite a few Jinjer reactions,- including from various musicians´s channels,- on rare occasions do even the musicians note anything funky going on,- which to me is very impressively done by Jinjer.
Pisces is a very melodically flowing song, but even when they chop things up and go percussive, though heavy and in your face, it´s still as groovy and flowing as a RHCP or Rage Against The Machine song.
I´ve heard women growl ,fry and scream before,- it´s just that Tati is an absolute master at it, I´ve heard funky beats before, I´m a born metalhead so the guitar playing is nothing new to me but Jinjer´s combination of it all mated with their uncanny second nature sense of what to the rest of us would be off beat and strange rhythms stands out to me as being unique.
And because they´re so god at it and it comes so naturally to them even the musicians don´t notice something that should be screaming in their faces!
An awesome band and a high-level display of consumate musicianship.
Only serves to heigthen my respect for them.
If you want to experience something very different but equally overwhelming here´s something for you:
Epica: Sancta Terra - featuring Floor Jansen - Live Retrospect Show ( YES, DO THE LIVE VERSION!!!) :)
Dude thank you so much for your input. Stick around and stay tuned for much more my friend
That record was made in the 90's and applies even more today....another reason to love that band. Thanks and keep doing their songs. They have no bad songs and albums!
React to undertow, it is probably the most under-rated tool song on their discography and definitely a haunting track
MJK talks here directly to Earth as is living creature. That action is "animation". The Latin word "anima" means “breath, soul”. The English adjective "animate" means make things “alive”. It comes from the Latin verb "animare" - “to give life to,” which in turn came from anima.
You should pry open your " third eye" next Tuesday. So good to see you. Keep up the good vids
Came out to watch you play. Why are you running away?!?
Favorite song on the album.
Really dig what you guys are doing and glad to see your subs going up. As a TooL fan from 94, I love your genuine enthusiasm for this band. Thanks for the laughs!
No sir, thank you for joing us on our adventure into these amazing bands
Trash Talkers Thank you for bringing it back a couple more seconds at the beginning. Those lyrics are key
Their live shows set the standard and are amazing.. they are the complete band/ live show...
On-eh-mah. If that makes sense. I base every one of my pronunciations off of what I've heard the band members say themselves. Great reaction guys!
Perfect! Yes that's how MJK pronounces it!
Boys - I'm digging your road to (TOOL) enlightenment so hard, and I know you ask for advice - give yourselves more time and space to reflect. Pause the video and talk about what you're feeling/thinking more often. Reaction videos are about the reaction as much as about the source text. Heaps of us already know the source text, and we know that it's awesome. We want to see your face light up the way our faces lit up that fist time. We're here for your personality and thoughts. We already love TOOL. Vibe it, bros.
I remember the first time I heard this song. I’ll never forget it. Thanks to the kid that smoked pot in 7th grade showing me tool. I’ll always remember that. I never knew music was that good before this. I miss those years. Also, love the show guys. Trash talkers is such a dope duo.
It would really help you guys to see the album packaging here. There is a hologram that shows the west coast being flooded. That's the aenima. It's the rising ocean levels from human idiocy. See you in Arizona Bay is another reference to this. Basically, it's a song about how he was fed up with LA.
Your statement is 100% correct.
I think one of you asked this in this vid or a previous one...the order of operations as Maynard and Justin Chancellor (bassist - who started on Aenima album and has been with them ever since - THANK GOD) laid out in interviews their song-writing process: Danny Carey and Justin and Adam (guitarist) will write the music...which takes YEARS evidently...then they give the track to Maynard to write lyrics into the music.
this song is literally a token of genius I play in a band and it takes a certain discipline to pull a tune like that off. especially the break down. some say the end is near! the rythm and bass and drums are a machine.
Tool Army Here, even though they say LA by name I'm sure it is directed at all the bullsh?t anywhere in this world. Please check out TOOL (PUSHIT), this song is about abusive relationships which hits home for me personally.
If you look up the meanings behind most of Tool’s songs, you’ll be mind fucked! Maynard is a lyrical genius. They wrote Lateralus with the Fibonacci sequence!! This particular song is how California should just break off into the ocean lmao but it’s so melodic
Love Tool Tuesdays guys!!! And Love that Lyrical Assassination in the beginning. Keep em coming. Peace Love n Light!!!
This is my favorite Tool song!
I heard this song in 1998 & so had to have it & went & bought the CD ................To me THIS song is just incredible & their best ........folowed by My 3rd Eye folowed by the rest of the album
“TOOL..just thank you”.. better words could never have been said.
I’ve watched you guys for a week or so now. Wanted to hit “subscribe “ right away.. but held off because I’ve made that mistake before (we all have right? Lol” hit it today. Love your reactions and commentary.
I’d love to hear y’all do a whole Tool series! The Pot, Schism, Forty Six & 2, Parabola, Prison Sex, Sober, etc
Maynard James Keegan is a GENUINE word smith. I wish I could remember everyones name ... These guys take their craft to unattainable heights
Mamma is referring to Mother Earth. The song is talking about Mother Earth deciding its done with humans and using natural disasters to rid itself of us. That's why he talks about tidal waves, praying for rain, earthquakes (fault lines that will not sit still), and why he uses the lyrics "learn to swim" over and over again.
My wife got me on to Tool years ago…. Gets ya right in the guts 🤘🏻
This song is based on a stand up comic bit called Arizona Bay by Bill Hicks, who was a friend of the band and was written after his passing
Alex Grey actually didn't do the artwork for this album lol... he started working with Tool on the Lateralus album through Fear Inoculum.
Adam Jones (guitar) has always been their art and music video director
Love this song. The patient would be a good one to react to next
Trash Talkers Anima is Latin for Mind, Soul. You know what Enima means. ✌
I saw Tool live earlier this year and they're just as, if not more, incredible than the first time I saw them 19 years ago. Not just because of how on point and in sync they are musically but the visuals make you feel like you're tripping. No bullshit. If you've seen them live you know what I'm talking about
They are the kings of rock! There is none higher 🤘🏻🤘🏻
1- The meaning of the word is the combination of two words, Anima - Soul and Enema
2- The cover art of this album is made by the Guitar player Adam Jones, He also did opiate and Undertow. Adam Jones is the Art director of everything poduced by tool, and he also makes all the official videos and all the visual images and video of the concerts.
3- He specifically is talking about the things he hate of LA, insecure acresses, hip gangsta wannabe, and specifically Ron L Hubbard, the founder of Scientology who tried several times to aproach Tool to make them part of their cult.
This was the song that cemented it for me….Tool are just on a whole other level than the rest of us….or it at least seems that way 🖤🥶cuz EVERYTHING they do is just fuckin amazing
Favorite album ever!! Love this song, H, 46 and 2, Third Eye, Stinkfist are also my favorites lol.
Love that you all exposed yourselves to Tool. Xoxo
Awesome! 🤘😊
Yeah, I remember in the late Nineties back in Maine WTOS would be playing this as I rolled back from work at midnight...I'd crank it up...
I always liked The Pot, that was one of my favs that I've heard by them.
There's a song with an apocalyptic theme of shifting Continental plates that I like a lot. Collective Calm in Mortal Oblivion by Abnormality. If you ever give it a try read the lyrics first cause first time though you'll probably never understand her, she's a really good growler. Thanks.
Vicarious is another killer song you should consider, love you guys and your reactions!!
Can relate to this song more than any other right now!!! Another Maynard masterpiece.
Great reaction guys as always
Wings for Marie pt 1 and 2 often get overlooked, but make you think of things you may not have given much thought to. Very touching songs by Tool
Should react to parabol/parabola, lateralus, schism, disposition/reflection/triad, lateralus album is a masterpiece
Seriously!!! Tool reaction means BRING UP THE LYRICS!
Have you guys seen them live yet. I just saw them three times in a row. Probably the greatest band I’ve ever seen and I’m 56. Unbelievable.
Is it just me or is this song more relevant now more than ever?
Never a more prophetic time to be listening to this
Do Lost Keys/Rosetta Stoned. With lyrics. Tool is always inclined towards musicality over technicality, but Rosetta Stoned might just be the song which showcases their balls out magic with time signatures. Also, Danny opens some dimesions in that song.
Took a few listens to appreciate that song, but certainly one of my favourites these days.
@@Draregkoeliekalie I feel like that's true for a lot of Tool songs for me. There is always something about the songs that makes them stand out but it sometimes takes a few listens to really appreciate that.
Rosetta in my opinion is the title track of fear inoculum.
thanks for the upload fellows. I have always said to myself if I ever ran into this Band , I too would also just say thank you. nothing more, they know.
A friend of mine once upon a time visualized this song as being out on a stormy sea, with the storm subsiding, intesifying, subsiding. This is a spot on visualization of the flow of this song :)
Lately I just listen to Tool while reading about quantum field theory, string theory and other fields of the unknown... I don't know but it just makes me incredibly happy and calm. Tool and physics are more closely related than I ever could have thought. Keep it up boys, I love how you enjoy the songs. :) Cheers from Croatia :)
Amazing song. Tool is a top 5 all time band. You guys would really like White Zombie. Check out more human than human.
La Sexorcisto was the shit though. I was in HS when it came out. Still love it. Black Sunshine with Iggy Pop is another fave.

Fucking loved this guys. Awesome to live through others hearing this shit for the first time.
Great choice this week fellas. 👍 for the studio version, That sounded Awesome!!! Vicarious is a must do and good to follow with. Don’t leave out Lateralus in these early listens. Stay on the Spiral, expand your own Universes.
Request for next Tuesday (both are lengthy): Lost Keys into Rosetta Stoned OR Disposition into Reflection into Triad. Songs have to be listened to at once but you'll enjoy it.
Yeeeaasss!
I vote for 'Disposition, Reflection, Triad'!
I mentioned/suggested it last week (mention this to me.. meeention anything). It's so badass n chill, until triad that is!
Really do love y'alls reactions tho, keep it up, stay safe & strong!
sorry guys, the art work is not Alex Grey, it was Cam De Leon. he was amazing and did a lot of TOOL's early artwork. Love your reviews, its fun to hear it again for the first time :)
Wait, are you serious.....oh no Hollywood messed up again
@@Hollywood6IX yeah, cant rely on Hollywood. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cam_de_Leon in fact there was a huge law suit involving Cam that delayed the Lateralus album. at any rate, Cam's art is amazing, i have bought a TON of art from him.
Haha. Alex grey did the art on the next album “lateralus” and onward though! Great reaction guys. Reminds me a lot of when I first got into them with an old friend. Constantly being blown away by their art and in complete awe. Rocking out too of course haha. Glad you guys are enjoying ! (:
@@egratudo1974 yea again my apologies.
@@Hollywood6IX no worries, glad you found the TOOL rabbit hole :) ive been listening to TOOL since 1994 and seen them dozens of times live, best live band ever. keep up the great reviews!!! give a listen to Hooker with a penis. and if you listen to it, you are welcome :D
I was up by Lake Superior and met some people from AZ while in a lake, when I heard they were from AZ, I said, "learn to swim, see you down in AZ bay." They looked at me all confused-like. lol
