I think the best and most accomplished performers draw one into their world and then one is absorbed by the narrative. Joyce Grenfell is certainly entertaining. Love many of her films too, always a pleasure to see her, a definite highlight.
I could listen to her all day.No-one came close to matching her oratory talent & only Victoria Wood can hold my attention in the same way today.Just blissful.
I have always enjoyed her humour, and first saw her performing on live television in the 1960's.. She was a very talented and engaging entertainer who really deserves to be better known today. Modern entertainers can learn a lot from studying her subtle comedy techniques and timing. Nothing was smutty, and all of the family could share the experience without reservation. It's a real shame that people feel compelled to stoop to gutter level in order to try to raise a laugh.

I genuinely can't understand why merely uttering a four-letter word with no actual joke elicits loud guffaws from so many audiences. This used to be the province of those of primary school age! It seems to me that true wit requires more than that.
Not only does Joyce give us the brilliant Vice Chancellor's wife she paints in our mind Mervin, and we know precisely what he is saying and how he is saying it with sight nor sound of him.
There are a couple of lovely thumbnail sketches of this delightful lady in the Helene Hanff book "The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street"...they're very good indeed, but nothing can do justice to the original. Thank you!
She was classically beautiful woman even into her Forties in the Fifties. She always had to put on her "common" face as to appear working-class in her skits as such people whilst always remaining a lady of class, distinction and beauty. I think that was the secret of her oratorical magic.
